Kallaste Kala- ja Sibulalaat 2026: the Lake Peipus region's major end-of-summer fair takes place on 29 August

Kallaste Kala- ja Sibulalaat 2026 takes place on Saturday, 29 August, bringing local food, the famous Peipsi onion, handicrafts and an end-of-summer fair atmosphere to the shores of Lake Peipus. It is a good reason to take a full-day trip and combine the fair with exploring Peipsimaa.

One of the Lake Peipsi region's largest traditional end-of-summer events begins in central Kallaste at 10.00. According to the organisers, activities continue from morning until late at night, and the programme is intended for the whole family.

Kallaste Kala- ja Sibulalaat 2026: when and where?

Date: 29 August 2026
Start: at 10.00
Location: central Kallaste and the central square, Peipsiääre Municipality, Tartu County
Headliner: HUNT at 13.00 on the stage in Kallaste central square.

The 2026 fair offers one more reason to visit Kallaste: according to the organisers, the renovated central square of Kallaste will also be ready by then.

What is sold at Kallaste fair?

Kallaste fair is not just an ordinary summer marketplace. Its strength lies in the local food and traditions of the Lake Peipsi region.

The official selection of goods for 2026 includes local onions, garlic, vegetables, seedlings, farm products, honey, preserves and juices. Smoked meat, bread, pies and other baked goods are also sold, as well as handicrafts, ceramics, wooden products and knitwear. Hot food, including soup and shashlik, is also served on site, and cafés are open. The fair also offers manufactured goods and antiques.

And, of course, the Kallaste fair is inextricably linked with the Peipsi onion.

This is not just a regional souvenir. The onions grown by Lake Peipus are rooted in a labour-intensive tradition: the onion beds are built high, and much of the work is done by hand. ERR has reported that fewer and fewer people are growing traditional Peipus onions, so buying local produce is also one way to support the region's old food culture.

At 13, HUNT takes the stage

One of the most important additions to this year's fair programme is HUNT's performance at 13.00 at Kallaste central square.

This makes the day particularly convenient for visitors coming from farther away: you can arrive at the fair at a leisurely pace in the morning, browse the local vendors' stalls and have something to eat, then listen to the concert.

According to the organiser, activities in Kallaste continue until late at night. However, it is worth checking for additional programme updates before travelling, as more event information may still be added.

Is Kallaste Kala- ja Sibulalaat suitable for visiting with children?

Yes—the organisers explicitly describe it as an event for the whole family. However, a separate detailed children's programme has not yet been published, so it is best not to promise specific attractions or activities that are not yet listed in the official programme.

For families, Kallaste's strength lies more in the combination of activities for a full day: the fair, local food, a concert, Lake Peipus and nearby attractions.

Turn the fair into a full family day out in the Lake Peipsi region

If you are travelling to Kallaste from farther away, you do not have to head straight home after the fair.

One of the easiest stops is in Kallaste itself: Kallaste liivakivipaljand. According to Visit Estonia, it is Estonia's longest Devonian sandstone outcrop—its length has been measured at approximately 930 metres, and it reaches up to eight metres in height.

Another good option is Alatskivi loss. This white, turreted castle is located near Kallaste, where visitors can explore the history of the manor, Eduard Tubina muuseum and other exhibitions.

This makes it very easy to plan the day on 29 August: head to Kallaste in the morning, visit the fair and enjoy local food, see HUNT at 13, and then visit the beach by Lake Peipsi, Kallaste liivakivipaljand or Alatskivi.

Why is this particular fair worth visiting?

The charm of Kallaste Kala- ja Sibulalaat lies not only in the number of stalls. It is one of those events where the location itself is at least as important as the programme.

Lake Peipsi, the atmosphere of the small town of Kallaste, local onions, farm products and the people who grow or make them themselves give the fair a character that cannot be found at an ordinary market in a large city.

If you are looking for a day trip with children, local food and something a little out of the ordinary for the last weekend of August, Kallaste on 29 August is an excellent choice.
