How to check hourly electricity prices in Estonia (Nord Pool / apps)

Checking electricity prices in Estonia (Nord Pool / apps)

In Estonia, as in the other Nordic countries, the price of electricity is based on the power exchange, or free-market principles. This means that the price changes every hour according to supply and demand. If you use an exchange-price plan (an exchange-price electricity contract), the cost of your consumption depends directly on the Nord Pool market price.

To save money and plan your energy use wisely, it is important to know where and how to check these prices. In this article, we look at how to find hourly prices using Nord Pool's official source, the Elering portal, and popular mobile apps.

How the hourly electricity price is determined

The Day-Ahead market

Electricity is mostly traded on the Nord Pool market on a “Day-Ahead” basis—this means that prices are set hourly for the following day. All electricity producers and buyers submit their bids, the system calculates the equilibrium point, and sets a price for each hour.

For example, at 13.00 today, prices are published for the 24 hours of the following day. This means that the day before, it is already known when electricity will be cheapest and when it will be most expensive.

15-minute prices – a new era

Starting in autumn 2025, the entire European electricity market will gradually transition to a 15-minute settlement unit (Market Time Unit). This means that the price will no longer change once an hour, but every 15 minutes.

In Estonia, Elering is also implementing this update, enabling more precise consumption management and pricing information. For example, you can plan exactly when it is worthwhile to run the washing machine or charge an electric car.

Peamised ametlikud allikad tunnihindade kontrollimiseks

1. Nord Pool

Nord Pool is the official electricity exchange for the Nordic and Baltic countries, where day-ahead prices are determined.

Koduleht: https://www.nordpoolgroup.com

On the page, you will find the menu “Market Data” → “Day-Ahead Prices”. There you can select the region (Estonia) and date to see prices for all 24 hours in euros per megawatt-hour (€/MWh).

2. Elering

Elering is Estonia's electricity grid operator and one of the most reliable sources for displaying local hourly prices.

Official data page: https://dashboard.elering.ee

In Elering's “Börsihindade” view, you can:

  • view prices for the current and following day;

  • view a chart showing hourly price changes;

  • compare prices with previous days;

  • download data in Excel format as well.

Elering already displays prices in Estonian time (EET / EEST) and also includes the average daily price. In addition, Elering offers a free API interface, which allows prices to be downloaded automatically or displayed, for example, in a smart home.

3. Enefit ja teised elektrimüüjad

Enefit (Eesti Energia) ning mitmed teised teenusepakkujad, nagu Alexela ja Imatra Elekter, kuvavad oma kodulehel ja rakendustes samuti Nord Pooli hindu.

Enefit offers customers a convenient way to view prices:

  • Enefit äpis näeb nii tänaseid kui homseid tunnihindu;

  • you can set up notifications when the price falls below or rises above a specified threshold;

  • you can also monitor consumption and bills.

This is especially useful if you have a spot-price contract, as you can immediately plan when to consume electricity at a lower cost.

Mobile apps for tracking hourly electricity prices

Nowadays, a smartphone is the most convenient way to check electricity prices. There are several good apps on the Estonian market that use Nord Pool and Elering data.

1. Elektrihind (App Store & Google Play)

Üks populaarsemaid Eesti rakendusi. Kuvab automaatselt tänase ja homse päeva hinnad, graafiku ning kõige odavamad ja kallimad tunnid.

  • You can set up notifications for when the price falls below a certain level.

  • Option to choose whether the price is displayed excluding or including VAT.

2. Enefit app

The official Eesti Energia app. In addition to prices, it also shows your consumption statistics, forecast, and hourly cost breakdown.

  • Very convenient for users with an exchange-price contract.

  • Alerts for high or low prices.

3. Elektri Börsihind (iOS)

A minimalist and simple app that displays prices both hourly and at 15-minute intervals. Useful for those who monitor market changes in greater detail.

4. Energy Prices EU

An international app that allows you to compare electricity prices across different European countries in real time. If you travel or live near a border, it can be useful for comparison.

All these apps obtain data directly from Nord Pool or Elering, so the results are accurate and up to date.

Hindade tõlgendamine ja lisakulud

When viewing the market price, bear in mind that it does not include VAT or other additional charges.

Näiteks kui Nord Poolis on hind 50 €/MWh, tähendab see 0,05 €/kWh. Lõplik hind sinu arvel võib olla kõrgem, sest sinna lisanduvad:

  • VAT (24%);

  • võrgu tasu;

  • the electricity retailer's margin;

  • the renewable energy fee and electricity excise duty.

Therefore, you should not compare the Nord Pool price directly with the final price on your bill. However, price movements can give you an idea of when it is most economical to use electricity.

Technical aspects

Time zone

Estonia uses EET (in winter) and EEST (in summer). Since Nord Pool displays data in the CET time zone, in Estonia you must always add +1 or +2 hours when reading the price table.

Data Download and API

Elering provides a free open API that developers and smart home systems can use to download prices automatically. It is well suited, for example, for:

  • for managing electric vehicle charging;

  • koduse soojuspumba tööaja optimeerimiseks;

  • to create energy management software.

Why is monitoring hourly prices useful?

  • You save money. If you use more electricity during cheaper hours, your monthly bill may decrease significantly.

  • You improve energy efficiency. You can program appliances (e.g. a water heater or washing machine) to run when the price is low.

  • You understand how the market works. Tracking exchange prices helps you see how weather, wind energy, or consumption in neighbouring countries affects prices.

For example, prices are usually lower in windy and sunny weather because more electricity is generated. In cold and cloudy weather, prices rise because demand is higher.

Summary

Elektri tunnihindade kontrollimine Eestis on lihtne ja tasuta.
Sul on mitu võimalust:

  • Nord Pool — official exchange price, but with a time difference (CET).

  • Elering — a portal using Estonian time and featuring a convenient graph.

  • Enefit and other sellers — show prices together with consumption data.

  • Apps — a quick way to view prices and receive notifications.

Thanks to these sources, you can plan the best times to use electricity each day and reduce your energy costs without sacrificing comfort.
