Snow towns and ice town experiences near Estonia: Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, and a realistic overview of Estonia

Every winter, people search for the same thing: snow towns, ice towns, ice and snow sculptures, real places where they can see something more than a single snow sculpture in a park.
Photos of giant ice palaces circulate on social media, but it often remains unclear where they are actually located and whether they can really be visited.

This article provides an honest and practical overview:

  • where to find real snow towns and ice cities near Estonia;

  • which destinations are planned and guaranteed;

  • offered by Finland, Latvia and Lithuania;

  • and what there really is to see in Estonia in winter 2026, without exaggeration.

What is a real snow town or ice town?

Before proceeding, it is important to clarify the concepts.

A genuine snow town / ice town means:

  • an entire area (not an individual sculpture);

  • castles, tunnels, “streets”, halls;

  • professional construction;

  • a duration ranging from weeks to months;

  • an area open to visitors on specific dates.

Not included:

  • children’s snow forts;

  • individual snow sculptures;

  • installations lasting a couple of days.

From this perspective, the picture ahead is very clear.

🇫🇮 Finland – the undisputed leader in snow towns and ice towns

❄️ SnowCastle of Kemi

If you are looking for the closest and most reliable snow town to Estonia, there is only one answer: Kemi.

SnowCastle of Kemi on:

  • a snow town built from scratch every winter;

  • every year with a completely new design;

  • one of the best-known snow towns in Europe.

What can you see there:

  • gigantic snow castles and ice sculptures;

  • halls and corridors made of ice;

  • an ice restaurant and, in some seasons, an ice hotel as well;

  • professional lighting solutions.

Season: usually from January to March–April

👉 This is a real snow town, and it is worth planning a trip specifically to visit it.

❄️ Rovaniemi and Lapland ice towns (optional extra)

Lapland has several other ice and snow complexes (such as ice hotels), but they are:

  • farther away;

  • more expensive;

  • more of a niche experience.

If the goal is a classic snow town, Kemi is the most logical choice.

🇱🇻 Latvia – the largest ice sculpture festival in the Baltics

❄️ Jelgava Ice Sculpture Festival

If you want an artistic and visually impressive experience, but do not want to travel far, Jelgava is ideal.

International Ice Sculpture Festival Jelgavas:

  • takes place every year;

  • brings together professional ice sculptors from around the world;

  • features dozens of large ice sculptures;

  • in the evenings, the area is illuminated and very impressive.

2026. aasta kuupäevad: 7.–8. veebruar

This is not a classic “snow town with streets”, but:

  • the scale and artistic quality are very high;

  • it is a planned and confirmed event;

  • It is easy to go there from Estonia for a weekend.

🇱🇹 Lithuania – winter installations, but not snow towns

In Lithuania:

  • there are no permanent snow towns or ice towns;

  • ice sculptures sometimes appear as part of winter festivals or Christmas markets;

  • the structures are short-lived and irregular.

Lithuania is better suited for:

  • for a city break;

  • for experiencing a winter atmosphere,
    but not for finding a snow town.

🇪🇪 Estonia – an honest overview + what is actually available in 2026

Estonia does not have permanent snow towns or ice towns like Kemi or Jelgava.
However, in the winter of 2026, Tallinn will host several specific snow town initiatives with set dates, which are worth mentioning.

❄️ Pirita lumelinn – Lillepi park

In the Pirita district, there was—and will also be in 2026—a joint snow town construction event, where:

  • people work together to create small snow “districts”;

  • families, friends, and school groups can participate;

  • the emphasis is on co-creation, not observation.

Location: Lillepi park (Rummu tee 4 area)
Format: free, community-based

This is not a tourist attraction, but a genuine snow-town-like experience on site.

❄️ A new snow city on Tallinn's coast – Stroomi rand (Põhja-Tallinn)

On January 24, 2026,  there will be another day of building a snow town in North Tallinn, which Gloss.ee also wrote about.

What this means:

  • In Stroomi ranna park, people are invited to build a snow town together;

  • snow figures, walls and small structures are built;

  • warm tea and a short programme are offered.

It is important to understand:

  • it is temporary and weather-dependent;

  • this is not a professional ice city;

  • but it is a real, concrete event with a set date.

Comparison: where to go and what to expect

Destination Form Level Planned
Kemi (Finland) Snow City ★★★★★ Yes
Jelgava (Latvia) Ice sculptures ★★★★☆ Yes
Estonia (Pirita, Stroomi) Community snow town ★★☆☆☆ Partially
Lithuania Installations ★★☆☆☆ Rarely

How to choose the right destination

  • I want a real snow castle → Kemi

  • I want an artistic ice experience → Jelgava

  • I want something local and free → Pirita / Stroomi

  • I just want a wintry atmosphere → Estonian cities in general

Summary

When looking for real snow and ice cities near Estonia, the picture is clear:

  • Finland (Kemi) is the best and most reliable choice;

  • Latvia (Jelgava) offers impressive ice art;

  • Estonia offers community-built and temporary snow cities, which are fun but cannot be compared to large ice cities.
