The Saaremaa–Hiiumaa ice road: the long-awaited opening and the excitement on the islands
8. veebruaril 2026 toimus Eesti elanike jaoks märkimisväärne sündmus – avati ametlikult selle aasta esimene jäätee, mis ühendab riigi suurimaid saari, Saaremaad ja Hiiumaad. 17-kilomeetrine trass, mis on rajatud jäätunud Läänemerele, sai tõeliseks päästerõngaks saarlastele, kes seisid silmitsi tõsiste häiretega parvlaevaliikluses anomaalselt karmi talve ja tugeva jää tõttu.
The opening of the ice road between Tärkma (Hiiumaa) and Triigi (Saaremaa) caused unprecedented excitement. From early morning, long queues of cars formed at the entrances to the route on both sides. According to ERR correspondents, by noon about 60 cars were waiting their turn in Saaremaa and around twenty in Hiiumaa, which meant a wait of an hour and a half. Drivers sought not only to shorten their journey but also to enjoy the unique opportunity to drive across the frozen sea, which is a rare and exciting experience.
“This is an exceptional but necessary solution for mitigating risks in the current situation and ensuring mobility options for Hiiumaa residents and visitors,” emphasised Minister of Infrastructure Kuldar Leis.
Jäätee ei ole muutunud mitte ainult mugavaks alternatiiviks, vaid ka elutähtsaks ühendusteeks, mis tagab saarte ühenduse mandriga. Transpordiameti peadirektor Priit Sauk märkis, et ametkond püüdis tee võimalikult kiiresti avada, et pakkuda autojuhtidele usaldusväärset marsruuti.
## Safety rules on ice
Jääteel liiklemine nõuab Transpordiameti poolt maksimaalse ohutuse tagamiseks väljatöötatud reeglite ranget järgimist. Trass on avatud ainult valgel ajal, kell 8.30–17.00, ning viimane auto lubatakse jääle kell 16.30. Nähtavuse halvenemisel alla 300 meetri liiklus peatatakse koheselt.

Erilist tähelepanu pööratakse ettevaatusabinõudele autos: turvavööd peavad olema lahti ja uksed kergesti avatavad. Kategooriliselt on keelatud peatumine, möödasõit ja liiklemine halbades nähtavustingimustes. Trassi 2,8. kilomeetril on jääprao ületamiseks rajatud spetsiaalne jääsild.
## Context and future prospects
Praegune jäätee on esimene ametlik seda tüüpi ületuskoht alates 2019. aastast. Vaatamata selle nõudlusele teatas taristuminister, et sel hooajal teisi jääteid avada ei plaanita. Ametivõimud hoiatavad tungivalt ka mitteametlike ja kontrollimata jääteede kasutamise eest, mis võivad olla eluohtlikud.
Jäätee seisukorda jälgib pidevalt Verston Eesti OÜ ning jääolude muutumisel võidakse see kiiresti sulgeda. Autojuhtidel soovitatakse kontrollida trassi töö kohta ajakohast teavet TarkTee portaalist.
