Tallinn's first drone training classroom has opened: children can try drone technology for themselves
There is now a place in Tallinn where children and young people can not only observe drone technology but also try it themselves.
On 18 September 2026, Tallinn's first drone training classroom opened at Energia avastuskeskus, combining practical drone training with engineering, programming, electronics, physics and aviation.
The new drone education classroom is intended for children and young people as well as Tallinn schools.
The aim is not only to teach drone piloting, but also to demonstrate through practical activities how modern technology actually works.
Drone technology hobby groups are already operating at Energia avastuskeskus, and from October 2026, Tallinn's general education schools will be able to book separate drone training educational programmes.
What do children learn in the drone training classroom?
Drone training is not just about picking up a controller and flying. The lessons combine several fields that children often encounter as separate subjects at school.
Drone piloting
Using FPV and football drones in theory and practice.
Programming
Learning the principles of controlling and programming technology.
Engineering
Understanding how devices are built and why they work.
Problem-solving
Practical tasks, reaction speed, and teamwork.
According to Darja Saar, Executive Director of Energia avastuskeskus, a young person's first experience with an FPV drone or drone football may lead them to pursue 3D modelling and printing, programming, and advanced studies in physics and mathematics.

Dronotics hobby groups for children aged 8–16
In September 2026, dronotics hobby groups for two age groups started at Energia avastuskeskus:
for children aged 8–11 and for children aged 12–16.
Both age groups use soccer drones and FPV drones and learn to fly them in theory and practice. The programme also includes flight and competition practice.

Drone education is also coming to Tallinn schools
The new classroom is not intended only for children who want to join a drone technology hobby group.
From October 2026, Tallinn's general education schools will be able to book drone training educational programmes from Energia avastuskeskus.
This makes it possible to connect the physics, mathematics and programming learned at school with practical tasks. Instead of seeing only a formula or program on a screen, students can observe how their knowledge affects the movement and behaviour of a real device.
What is drone football?
One of the most exciting activities at Energia avastuskeskus is drone soccer.
It is a technology-based team game that uses drones fitted with special protective frames.
The game combines drone piloting, coordination, quick reactions and teamwork. At the same time, young people become familiar almost without noticing with technical skills that might seem much more difficult to learn from a textbook alone.
According to the latest information from Energia avastuskeskus, public drone football sessions take place every day at
12.00, 14.00 and 16.00.
The schedule may change, so it is advisable to check it on the centre's website before visiting.

Can visitors try drones without joining a hobby group?
Yes. The drone training classroom does not mean that registering for a hobby group for the entire academic year is the only way to become familiar with drones.
Public drone football sessions also allow visitors to try the technology during a regular visit. In addition, Energia avastuskeskus has offered drone activities for children and young people at city camps.
A visit to the centre can therefore be a good first step for a child who has never flown a drone before and is just beginning to explore whether this kind of hobby would suit them.
Who might particularly enjoy drone training?
Not all children are enthusiastic about the same hobbies. Drone education can be particularly exciting for a child or young person who enjoys:
- robots and technology;
- LEGO and construction;
- computer games;
- programming;
- electronics;
- aviation;
- competitions and practical tasks.
A drone is immediately visible and understandable to a child: if something is changed in its controls, settings or program, the result can actually be seen. This is precisely what can make technology and the exact sciences much more interesting even for those who find conventional theory-based learning abstract.

Why is the new drone classroom important?
Tallinn’s first drone classroom makes a rapidly developing field of technology much more accessible to children.
Instead of merely watching drones fly online, children can control and test them themselves and learn what happens inside the device.
Drone education for children and young people has been developed at Energia avastuskeskus since March 2026 in cooperation with SA Tallinna Tehnika- ja Teaduskeskuse, Tallinna linna and HobiZone klubiga as part of the Test in Tallinn project. The drone classroom was funded by Tallinna linn.
The drone soccer field created as part of the Test in Tallinn program is designed to allow schools, students and other interested parties to try drone soccer in a safe environment and combine it with engineering education.

Frequently asked questions
At what age can children start learning drone technology at Energia avastuskeskus?
In the 2026/2027 academic year, there are drone technology clubs for children aged 8–11 and 12–16.
Does the child need to have their own drone?
The club programme uses FPV drones and football drones for learning activities, and the published participation requirements do not state that participants must have their own drone.
Can the drones also be tried without joining a club?
Yes. Energia avastuskeskus holds public drone football sessions that offer an opportunity to discover drone technology for the first time.
Can Tallinn schools use the drone classroom?
Yes. Starting in October 2026, Tallinn general education schools can order drone education programs.
